Camera captures man trying to break into cars in Cape Coral

CAPE CORAL, Fla. - A ring camera recorded a man when he checked to see if cars were unlocked.

The owner of the camera posted the video to the Neighbors app. He also shared the video with the Cape Coral Police Department.

"If there's something more immediate and visceral of seeing a criminal in action doing these things in our city," Corporal Phil Mullen said.

Mullen said the department could request videos that were posted to the app. It saves officers a few steps when they investigate cases.

"We get these clear videos to identify suspects and it's a wonderful ting," Mullen said.

4 In Your Corner showed the surveillance video to Sebastian Contreras. Contreras has lived in the Cape for the past seven years. He was surprised to watch the video, but happy he's aware of the app.

"It's nice you can see on your phone someone's camera because not everyone as surveillance on their houses," he said.

The app is free to download. Potential users don't need other Ring products to use the system. They can upload videos to the from anywhere.
