CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- New protection is underway for burrowing owls in Cape Coral. Monday night, the city council approved an ordinance to protect the threatened species.
The bill exempts activities within burrowing owl protection zones, give penalties to violators, and creates more regulations.
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission designated the burrowing owl as a "threatened” species in January 2017.
Cape Coral has a significant population of burrowing owls.
