FORT MYERS, Fla. — An vacant Fort Myers lot near the corner of Winkler road and Colonial boulevard, is finally seeing some development.

The Tampa-based company, Blue Sky Communities, is planning to build affordable housing units on the land.

Construction is set to begin in March of 2020 and the units will open the following year.

When done, the development will feature 95 units that range from $440 to $906.

The man behind this project, Shawn Wilson, the President of Blue Sky Communities, says that as the population in Southwest Florida rises, so does the need for this type of housing.

"[Those who need the housing are] either stretching to rent an apartment that they can't really afford for let's say $1500 a month or they're renting a place for $700 or $800 a month that they can afford, but it's in a high crime area," said Wilson.

Next month the city council will be holding a public hearing to discuss the development's next steps.
