12-year-old takes on Cape Coral pollution

CAPE CORAL, Fla. — One Southwest Florida girl is taking matters into her own hands…or boat.

School was out this past Monday, and Greg McCandlish says he was shocked when his granddaughter, Brooke Bascomb, told him what she wanted to do for the day. “She said she wanted to clean up the canals”, Greg told Fox 4.

And that’s exactly what they did. They pulled trash from the canal in their backyard and made their way under the Veteran’s Parkway overpass.

Brooke is passionate about the outdoors. She attributes that to her love for animals and nature.

That’s why she gets frustrated when she sees trash where it shouldn’t be. “It’s like …that’s not supposed to be there while we’re fishing…or like swimming”, she said.

But Brooke’s interest in keeping the environment clean goes beyond our local waterways. She walked us towards an everyday path that leads to her bus stop. The roadside was lined with cigarette buds.

She’s working to clean that up, too. “Put your garbage away correctly. Don’t just throw it on the ground”, she says.

The duo plans to go back out again, and they invite others to join them.

For now, grandpa is just very proud. “She took that initiative on her own. She just a good kid.”
