FORT MYERS, Fla. --- Congressman Francis Rooney made an appearance at Florida Gulf Coast University on Saturday to encourage high school students in his district to apply for Service Academy nominations. Each member of congress is allowed to nominate up to ten individuals for a position at any one of America's military service academies.

Rooney's current nominee Michael Morell was offered a place at three military academies; The United States Military Academy at West Point, The United States Air Force Academy and the United States Naval Academy. Morell has chosen to attend the United States Naval Academy in the fall. He admits that originally military service was not in his plans.

When Morell decided to consider going into the armed forces when he began considering his future after high school.

“I’m an athlete, I’m a student, I’m a leader. I wanted something that combined those three things. So when I found Navy that really sparked something.“

Morell began preparing during his junior year of high school. Now that he plans to attend the Naval Academy, he's hoping that he'll be able to do good in the armed forces.
