Tropical Storm Irma has developed in the east Atlantic from a tropical wave previously designated as Invest 93L.

Wind speeds are currently at 45 mph and Irma is moving west at 18 mph through the open Atlantic. It is currently located west of the Cabo Verde Islands.

Although a general westward direction is expected over the next several days, it is too early to predict potential threats to the U.S. Several environmental factors will come into play over the next 7-10 days in determining Irma's track and potential strengthening.

The National Hurricane Center will begin issuing advisories on Irma at 11 a.m.
