Jeremy Wade is a writer and TV presenter with a special interest in rivers and freshwater fish. He has been travelling to the world's most remote rivers for 35 years.

He grew up in south-east England, on the banks of the Suffolk Stour. After gaining a degree in zoology and a postgraduate certificate in education, he briefly worked as a biology teacher. His first overseas fishing trip was to India in 1982, followed by expeditions to the Mekong, Congo and Amazon, partially funded by an on-off career as a freelance writer.

In 1992 he co-wrote (with Paul Boote) Somewhere Down The Crazy River, now considered to be a classic of angling literature. He has also written for The Times, Guardian, Sunday Telegraph, The Field and BBC Wildlife magazine.

In 2002 he filmed Jungle Hooks, a five-part series set in the Amazon, for Discovery Europe, and in 2005 he followed this up with Jungle Hooks India. River Monsters started as a one-off programme filmed in India in 2008. It has now completed nine seasons.

"I don't see myself as a particularly expert angler," he says. "My background is getting into the kinds of places where outsiders don't normally go, with enough energy left to put a line in the water."
