The demand for mental health services is stronger than ever, with nearly 6 in 10 (56%) Americans seeking or wanting to seek mental health services either for themselves or for a loved one. In addition, misconceptions about serious mental illness abound. While as a nation we are placing more emphasis on mental health than ever, serious mental illness remains widely misunderstood and insufficiently treated. This has been compounded by outdated approaches to medical treatment and schizophrenia clinical practice guidelines that have not been updated in 15 years.
