CAPE CORAL, Fla – Some Fall sports practices at Lee County high schools will begin Monday.

Getting student athletes back to some sort of normal is something parents have been pushing for in recent weeks.

More than 40,000 supported a recent petition and rallied together at the last FHSAA meeting.

Practices will happen in two phases for Lee County High Schools.

Low-risk sports, like swimming and cross country, begin Monday. High-risk sports like football will start August 31 when schools reopen.

Football athletes will remain in their summer groups of 20 players or less. Full practices and games are then expected to start in September.

There’s a lot to work out between now and then, including who teams will play and whether fans will be allowed to attend.

For now, the district said games will be played locally within the district. They could expand to play schools in Charlotte and Collier, but other county games are not being considered at this time.

Meanwhile local coaches say they're keeping *safety top of mind, as practices start back up.

The district said it’s still working to figure out whether fans should be allowed at games. It’s working closely with local health experts to make that decision. Collier has already decided not to allow fans.
