FORT MYERS, Fla.-- There’s plenty to be stressed about these days between the pandemic, unemployment rates, empty shelves at stores–– and that's just to name a few.
That’s why Serenity Counseling Center would like people to take advantage of their open doors. The office may not be physically open at the moment, but they're taking virtual appointments.
“We wanted to make sure we could continue our services because we feel it’s one that people really need right now,” said Counselor Janean Byrne.
Janean Byrne said –– now more than ever–– people should prioritize their mental health.
Her team has been checking in on their current clients a little more due to everything happening with COVID-19. However, the appointments are through video chats or old fashioned phone calls. Byrne has notice her mom clients seem to be struggling the most.
“It’s been a complete role change for them because they’re used to going to work and the kids going to school, said Byrne. "At this time, the schedules are completely different.”
The center has therapists that work in various fields including couples, family, and career counseling. Right now, they're offering discounted virtual sessions for anyone who needs help.
Byrne has noticed people are stressing over things out of their control. She suggested writing down the things in your control, and if that doesn't help, take a break.
“You want to take a brain break. You know, read a book or play a game. You need balance when it comes to managing stress. “
Another important thing Byrne has been telling her patients is to remember the current situation isn't permanent.
"I think sometimes we get stuck in our heads. We get stuck on 'this is what is going on now' and we think it will be like this forever.”
