WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (WPTV) -- There's a new initiative to crack down on slow drivers. A warning is going up on highway billboards warning people to move over if they plan to drive slower than traffic.
When it comes to slow versus fast on Florida's highways, Nick Avgoulas of Sanibel, Fla., says slow is the bigger problem. "At least when people are speeding, they are focused," said Avgoulas.
Sgt. Mark Wysocky with the Florida Highway Patrol says speeders are more obvious, which is why those violations far outnumber impeding traffic citations. However, that doesn't mean troopers are going to ignore slow drivers, especially when it comes to road rage and safety concerns.
Wysocky says there's a reason some drivers move too slow. "A lot of times what we see is the person that's driving slow also may be on their cell phone or is distracted."
He wants drivers to know if you're going to drive slow, be sure to avoid the left lanes.
Florida statute 316.081 dictates that "any vehicle proceeding at less than the normal speed of traffic...shall be driven in the right-hand lane...except when overtaking and passing another vehicle" on a roadway with two or more lanes heading the same direction.
If you are caught driving too slow in a passing lane, you could face a fine.
