Residents deploy homemade 'boom' to keep algae sludge away

Posted

LEE COUNTY, Fla. -- People living in one Cape Coral neighborhood have come up with their own plan to get rid of the algae.

It's called an algae “boom.”

It's made of pool cage screen sewn together into a single panel and weighted down with dive weights.
The top of the screen has a sleeve and is slid onto 90-foot length of PVC pipe.

A neighbor says it's working so far.  "I was impressed.  Somebody did some good thinking; it's not complex at all, it's very, very effective, keeping that sludge out of the canal.  I wish to heck I would have thought about it."

Police came to check out the boom. Turns out, technically it's not legal because it's a navigational hazard for boats.  But the officer says because Governor Scott declared a state of emergency, they're fine with it -- as long as it's temporary.
