LEE COUNTY, Fla.-- Next week we will learn if a local company's algae-killing solution works in the field.

Ecological Laboratories, a Cape Coral biotech firm, tested their algae-killer in the Cabot Canal, which is near Veterans Parkway. The company says their process uses a natural bacteria instead of a chemical compound to kill the algae's food source.

When asked about the testing, the company told Four in Your Corner "the algae literally requires a nutrients source, primarily, nitrate and phosphate. Our product as the capability or taking the nutrition requirements that the algae needs and cycling out of the water back to the atmosphere as nitrogen gas."

As part of the trial, the company is required to test and document how the quality of the water is affected. If it works, it could be used throughout Cape Coral.
