Fort Myers boy collects treats for the troops

Posted

They say it's better to give than receive and for nine years Sip and Sendin Cape Coral has been doing just that.

The business, that ships all kinds of gifts, started Holiday for Heroes nine years ago.  They collect, box up and ship care packages full of necessities to our troops over seas.

Well, this year one Fort Myers boy decided to get in on the giving.

Stephen Prendiville, a fifth grader at Allen Park Elementary, thought it would be nice for the troops to have a sweet holiday treat in their packages.

"I thought it would be nice if each box had a hot cocoa thing in it so, I told my mom and she said we should ask so I wrote a letter," he said.

The letter was to ConAgra Foods, the makers of Swiss Miss Hot Cocoa Mix.
Stephen didn't stop at hot chocolate though.  He looked on ConAgra's website and noticed another treat our troops might like.

"I saw that they also own Slim Jim," he explained.

Stephen asked the folks at ConAgra to donate enough Hot Cocoa and Slim Jims for 1-thousand troops.

One week later a delivery that towered over his head was unloaded at Sip and Send in Cape Coral ready to be sent to Afghanistan in the care packages.

Stephen and his mom are just happy they could help the Holiday for Heroesprogram and send our soldiers a little taste of the holidays.
