BALTIMORE -- Sarasota's police chief is taking a leave of absence. Her daughter, who is a police officer in Baltimore, was shot in the line of duty.

This happened Thursday in a suburb outside Baltimore, Maryland. Sarasota Chief Bernadette DiPino's daughter is an officer there.

The department says she responded to reports of a man held up inside with a gun. They say when they got here he started firing, hitting Chief DiPino's daughter in the chest.
An officer returned fire, killing the man.

Now a Baltimore politician is asking you to keep the officer and her family in your thoughts. "We're not out of the woods yet, as we've been reported. So we would just ask the people to send prayers to the officer to the officer's family and we're optimistic that the outcome will be positive," said Johnny Olszewski.

The officer is in the intensive care unit at last check.
