Lightning strike at Miami airport tower affects flights

MIAMI (AP) - Several flights at the Miami International Airport were delayed or cancelled after lightning struck the Federal Aviation Administration tower.

FAA spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen tells local media that lightning hit the airport's tower around 7:30 p.m., affecting some radio frequencies and phone lines. The radar kept operating, and the phone lines and frequencies have since been restored.

According to the Miami International Airport's website, there have been 59 delays and 10 cancellations.

Florida Power and Light reported 14,371 power outages in Miami-Dade County and 1,722 in Broward County.

By 10 p.m., planes were landing and taking off again.
