Naples woman dies in head-on crash Wednesday

COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. -- An 87-year-old woman died and another was injured Wednesday when troopers say she drove into the path of another car in South Naples.

It happened at 11:43 a.m. on Rattlesnake Hammock Road.

According to Florida Highway Patrol, 87-year-old Ethel Bonesteel was driving a minivan east on Rattlesnake Hammock when she pulled into the left turn lane at County Barn Lane.  Troopers say she entered the intersection on a flashing yellow signal and entered the path of a westbound car.

The front of the car hit the front left of the van and then veered off the road and hit a crosswalk signal.  Bonesteel's van was stun around on the roadway.

Bonesteel was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The car's driver, 47-year-old Karl Amrhein on Naples, was seriously injured and taken to Naples Community Hospital.

The crash is still under investigation.
