FORT MYERS, FLa. -- Donna Sutton's vacation in Key West last week took a turn for the worse, when she claims a mosquito bite gave her the Zika virus. "I've got mosquito bites with a rash around it and as you can see my eyes are totally red," she said. She suffers from a rash and red eyes;symptoms the CDC says are commonly associated with Zika. It's a heavy tourist season in Florida, so people are tracking it back to pretty much every state."
Now back in Detroit, I called Sutton to find out what she claims the Doctors told her. "I went to my local Emergency room, St. John in Detroit and they did diagnose it, as as the Zika virus.
So I called the Michigan Department of Health to verify her claim. By phone a spokesperson with the Department tells me, "No confirmed cases in Michigan. You would have to follow up with her, all I can tell you is there are no confirmed cases in our state."
So I called Sutton back to tell her what I learned and to follow up with her on her claims. "Last Friday, they said it is Zika, so, I, like I said, I, don't know. I, I, do know that I, I am sick," said Sutton.
Sutton says the hospital that initially diagnosed her with Zika last week has since changed its assessment, and now says it doesn't know what has caused her illness.
