LEE COUNTY, Fla. -- A Lehigh Acres man is charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon after pulling a gun on a couple during a road rage incident.

The Lee County Sheriff's Office arrest report said the couple was driving down Lee Boulevard when they unintentionally cut off 23-year-old Jaydon Smith. Smith began driving aggressively and tailgating the couple, so they pulled over near the Speedway gas station on Beth Stacey Boulevard to get out of his way.

Deputies said Smith pulled up next to the couple wearing a face mask, rolled down his window, and pointed a gun at the couple.

"I'm not surprised," Rodney Richard, who drives for a living, said. "People seem to be getting more brazen. People are getting too ballsy."

Within minutes of the incident, the couple drove to the Sheriff's Office substation on Homestead Road and told deputies what happened.

"That's definitely impressive on their part. Quick thinking on whoever was driving," Richard said.

Deputies tracked Smith down shortly after and arrested him.

If you ever find yourself in this situation, former police chief Walt Zalisko said you should do what this couple did and drive to the closest law enforcement office.

"Or some public place where there are a lot of people. Just park there, get on your phone, call the deputy, and just stay there where there a lot of people visible," Zalisko said.

He also said don't pull over to the side of the road right away because you could be sending the wrong message to the aggressive driver that you'd like to get aggressive, too.
