Man leaves trail of blood while breaking into multiple homes in Lehigh

One man is in custody following a string of bizarre break-ins in Lehigh Acres. The break-ins happened around 6 a.m. on Homer Avenue South near Gunnery Road.

Witnesses say the man who was arrested may have been on drugs.

"I was hearing somebody saying 'help, help me,'" said Jaeyda Lopez, who lives on Homer.

Lopez said she thought it was somebody playing a joke at first, until she saw bloody hand prints on her garage door.

"I was like, 'somebody actually tried to break into my house,'" she said.

Investigators from the Lee County Sheriff's Office placed about 2 dozen yellow markers along Homer Avenue, each indicating blood drops.

Carlos Hernandez told reporters that someone broke through the window of his sister's house at the corner of Homer Avenue and 7 Street Southwest, and smeared blood all over the front door.

"He was saying 'I'm dying, I'm dying,'" Hernandez said in Spanish. "My sister told her husband to get in the room, and by the time she came back to the door, he broke the window to get inside."

He said his brother-in-law managed to get the man out of the house, but his father was taken to the hospital due to high blood pressure from the ordeal.

Ira Dale said the suspect also broke into the duplex where his mother-in-law lives, leaving more broken glass and blood as he went through one window and out another.

"I saw the blood that was on my front door and her front door, and was all throughout the house, and it was unreal," Dale said.

The suspect was taken to the hospital for treatment, and will likely be arrested once he's stable.
