COLLIER COUNTY, Fla. -- A man is charged with striking the people who were helping him! An EMT and a Collier County deputy were hit by Joe Barr after being pulled over for driving erratically Wednesday night in East Naples.
They say it is rare for a patient to get that out of control. But it does happen, normally police are able to control unruly patients. But if that doesn't work, EMT's will turn to chemical sedation. "Which is giving them drugs that will appropriately control and sedate them, where we can then be able to manage them successfully."
Those decisions are made very quickly. EMT's refer to the unruliness as "excitement delirium". Most of the time the patients are under the influence of synthetic marijuana or other drugs.
As for the incident in East Naples, Barr suffered minor injuries and was arrested for battery on a first responder.
No law enforcement or first responders were hurt.
