CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla — Florida Highway Patrol is investigating a deadly crash in Charlotte County after a wrong-way driver caused a head-on collision on Friday.

Troopers say a 50-year-old man was driving a pickup truck traveling northbound on the southbound lanes of US-41 approaching Morningside Drive.

A 21-year-old woman from Cape Coral was driving a sedan southbound on US-41 on the inside lane, also approaching Morningside Drive.

Investigators say the front of the pickup truck collided with the sedan's front, causing it to rotate counterclockwise.

The sedan finally stopped on the southwest corner of the intersection.

Troopers say the 21-year-old driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

They say the pickup truck continued to drive northbound in the southbound lanes and eventually collided with the front of another vehicle.

That vehicle was driven by a 42-year-old woman from Lehigh Acres who was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

The pickup truck finally stopped in the southbound lanes of US-41 facing north.

He was also taken to a local hospital.

Troopers say driver of the pickup truck and the 42-year-old woman was transported to the hospitals in the area.

FHP says alcohol is suspected for the driver of the pickup truck, and criminal charges are pending.
