NAPLES, Fla. -- A Naples woman is in jail after a neighbor says she stole $5,000 in cash from her after hitting her dog with a car.

It started on Saturday, May 12 at the Sierra Grande Apartments off Rattlesnake Hammock Road.

The victim told investigators that around 11:30 p.m. she was walking her dog in the parking lot when a car was driving fast through the parking lot and hit her dog.

The driver, later identified as 50-year-old Deborah Lazarou, immediately stopped and offered to drive them to an area animal hospital.

While there, the victim asked Lazarou to watch her purse, which contained $9,000 in cash.

The victim said she later used $3,600 in cash to pay the bill, and Lazarou gave her a ride home.

When the victim arrived home, she realized that $5,000 was missing. A review of surveillance video at the animal hospital showed Lazarou searching the victim's purse and walking into the bathroom with the cash in her hand.

Monday, detectives interviewed Lazarou at her apartment and arrested her for Grand Theft.
