Water waste: flooded lot, and rotten egg smell concerns resident during drought

Cape Coral is in a severe drought, and that's why one resident is wondering why the city hasn't forced his neighbor to repair a leaky well pipe that has flooded an empty lot.

To Kevin Bechler, the empty lot next to his home is a health concern.  "You can see it's all flooded right here," said Kevin Bechler.

There’s water just about everywhere you step, and he believes it’s coming from his neighbor’s well water system.

"I could see the mist of water just coming over the fence and just like my house the well is in that corner, I'm assuming his well is right there and most likely broken."

Four in Your Corner captured images of water gushing from fenced backyard. A few inches from the fence there are puddles of water which smelled liked rotten eggs.  “That's nasty and then you know, all this water is sitting. You got mosquitos, bugs breeding, diseases," said Bechler.

He and his neighbors rely on well water. Their well systems are not connected but Bechler’s concern is more about the lack of rain.

"It's very frustrating, especially with them saying we're in a drought," said Bechler.

So he he wants his neighbor to conserve water and repair the leak. A Cape Coral City spokesperson told Four In Your Corner the well is privately owned; therefore the city doesn’t maintain it.

Bechler says he plans to keep calling city officials until the lot is dried up; and his neighbor’s leaky well pipe is fixed.
