Violent crimes up, non-violent crimes down in Cape Coral

CAPE CORAL, Fla. - Newly released crime statistics shows Cape Coral's overall crime numbers are down 3.2% in 2016.

But while the city remains the #1 safest city in Florida for the size when it comes to violent crimes, it is #2 safest overall according to data from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.

The data shows the amount of violent crimes went up between 2015 and 2016. The city saw a total of 200 violent crimes in 2015 and 224 incidents in 2016, an increase of 12%.

When it comes to the most serious violent crimes such as murders, rapes and assaults, those numbers went down 3.2%.

While the city has seen an overall increase in violent crimes from 2015 to 2016, the numbers are down 6.7% over the last 2 years.

Meanwhile, nonviolent crimes went down 1.8% in 2016.
