Update
FHP said one person is dead after five vehicles were involved in a crash after a driver fell asleep at the wheel.

The driver was traveling north on U.S. 41, approaching the intersection of Old U.S. 41, when he veered into the left lane and collided with another vehicle. The second vehicle was then pushed over the median and into the southbound lanes.

The first vehicle then collided with the rear of a third vehicle, causing a subsequent collision with two other cars.

A passenger in the second vehicle, and 80-year-old female, was transported to a hospital and later pronounced dead.

Earlier reporting
Florida Highway Patrol said the northbound lanes of U.S. 41 are closed due to a fatal car accident in the area.

The crash involved one fatality and five vehicles total, FHP said.

Traffic is being rerouted onto Old U.S. 41. Motorists should be aware of heavy congestion in the area.
