CHARLOTTE COUNTY, Fla. -- Two people are in the hospital after a crash involving a UPS truck and a fuel truck in Punta Gorda.
It happened at 2:39 p.m. Wednesday.
Florida Highway Patrol says the driver of the UPS truck was driving westbound on Bermont Road near Sunset Boulevard when he swerved to avoid stopped traffic ahead. This caused him to drive into oncoming traffic, where he collided with the fuel tanker head-on.
The UPS driver, 22-year-old John Tufano of Port Charlotte, was seriously injured and taken to Lee Memorial Hospital.
The tanker truck’s driver, 61-year-old Alpha Drawdy of Arcadia, sustained minor injuries and was treated at Bayfront Punta Gorda.
A Hazmat crew was on scene monitoring the fuel truck until it could be drained and moved.
Charges remain pending.
