The Collier County Public Works Department has spent the better part of this week making sure culverts are free and clear of any debris that could contribute to flooding.

Visitors to the area were disappointed to hear about a Memorial Day weekend washout.

"We we're looking forward to coming down here just relaxing, soaking up some sun," said Eileen Cunningham, who’s visiting from Connecticut.

A tropical system churning off the Gulf of Mexico is expected to bring more rain to Southwest Florida over the weekend

Collier County's Emergency Management Director says this should serve as a reminder that hurricane season is just around the corner.

"Don't think that we're not vulnerable again this year to a similar, lesser or even smaller event, so understand that hurricanes are a fact of of life,” said Dan Summers.

Summers says now is the time to stock up on hurricane supples, before there is a run on important items, especially generators which are still in short supply.

"Remember what you learned last year, what were you short on, what few extra items should you have had, and is it really fair to say 72 hours is enough preparedness supplies.”

This weekend will be anything but a "dry run" for Eileen and her husband Mark.   They remember what it is like to drive in naples during torrential rain.

"I remember 41 (Tamiami Trail) you couldn't even see a couple cars in front of you,” said Mark Cunningham.

Drivers heading out of town for the long holiday weekend are urged to use caution as rain from the tropical system is expected to extend throughout the state.
