CLEWISTON, Fla. — A train collided with a semi-truck and derailed early Monday morning.
Florida Highway Patrol said the crash happened around 2:45 a.m. on the railroad tracks intersecting at U.S. 27 and Flagler Street.
According to their initial investigation, a semi-truck approached the railroad crossing and passed through the crossing gate. The truck collided with the right side of the oncoming train.
The train was pulling 46 empty cars, some of which derailed as a result of the collision, blocking the eastbound and westbound lanes of the highway.
The truck burst into flames and came to rest on the right shoulder. The truck's driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
A complete closure of the highway was in place for about four hours, with detours and backups continuing throughout the afternoon.
A motorist approaching the area at the time of the crash reported heavy fog in the area; foggy conditions were observed well after daybreak. It has not been confirmed if weather played a role in the collision.
