Passenger dies in crash on Cypress Lake Drive

FORT MYERS, Fla. — UPDATE 10:30 P.M.:

Just after 5 p.m. on Thursday, an SUV was driving east on Cypress Lake Drive and attempted a left turn but drove into the path of oncoming traffic hitting a car and another SUV.

The SUV rotated off the roadway, collided with a utility pole and came to rest. The car and the other SUV came to rest in the area of collision.

The passeneger of the eastbound SUV, an 83-year-old woman from St. Charles, Illinois, was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, a 65-year-old woman from Hampshire, Illinois, was seriosuly injured.

The driver of the car reported no injuries, and the driver of the other SUV had minor injuries.

The westbound lanes of Cypress Lake Drive between Winkler Road and Summerlin Road are closed due to a crash.

Lee County deputies say these will be shut down for an undetermined amount of time.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area and seek an alternate route if possible.
