A Fort Myers Community is keeping a close eye on their property after a teenager was caught trying to steal a Porsche. The incident happened overnight along Maravilla Avenue in the Green Tee Community.
Brittany Fesler told Four In Your Corner she was with a friend when she witnessed a thief weaving in and out of apartment complexes in Fort Myers.
"We saw some kid riding around on a bicycle. It was kind of suspicious," Fesler said. "He was riding in and out of the streets and was hiding like he was trying to avoid the police."
Fesler says she watched the suspect trying to break into cars and successfully opening the doors of a Porsche parked in the neighborhood before calling police.
“I just couldn’t take it anymore. I needed to call the police because I knew something was not right. Within minutes we saw the police officer driving down the road.”
Within minutes multiple cop cars surrounded the neighborhood.
"The cops asked me to give them a description to confirm the identity of the suspect who turned out to be this young teenager," she said.
The owner of the Porsche declined to go on camera but told our crews he would not press charges.
People living in surrounding neighborhoods tell Four In Your Corner they aren't surprised there are break-ins in the area but the number of break-ins so far are alarming.
Four In Your Corner pulled numbers from multiple law enforcement agencies using crime maps available to you. The numbers are from January 1st to date.
Crime maps show there have been more than200 thefts of and from vehicles in Cape Coral. The Fort Myers Police Department's Crime Map only shows seven listed in the area, while the Lee County Sheriff's Office has record of 92 incidents in their jurisdiction.
