The 2017 hurricane season is off to an early start.
The National Hurricane Center says Subtropical Depression One formed early Wednesday between Bermuda and the Azores with maximum sustained winds of 35 mph.
If the system strengthens a bit to winds over 40 mph, it would become Subtropical Storm Arlene.
The weak system is expected to gradually dissipate as it tracks slowly towards the north northeast over the next couple of days and will have no impact on any land areas.
Tropical systems in April are rare but not unheard of. The last was Ana back in 2003.
Hurricane season officially begins June 1st and lasts through November 30th.
