FORT MYERS BEACH, Fla. – Memorial Day Weekend in Fort Myers Beach ended with gunshots Monday.  It happened at the Lani Kai, one of the area's most popular hotels.

Lee County deputies are now working to figure out who's behind at shooting that left two people shot and wounded around 6:40 p.m. Monday.

Making the investigation harder is the fact that deputies say the victims are not cooperating.

Deputies say it was not a random act, and it was part of a confrontation that took place in the parking lot.

We spoke with witnesses that say they were there when the shots ring out.  "It was just people scattering everywhere, and we heard two shots but we kept moving because the kids were already in the room.  Then I called back to the hotel to see what was going on and they advised us just to stay in the room."

We'll continue to stay on top of this developing story as law enforcement tries to find out who fired the shots.

Hotel management posted a statement on the Fox 4 Facebook page, saying:

“The Lani Kai is deeply saddened by this unfortunate incident. On behalf of our entire staff, we send our thoughts and prayers to the victims of this senseless violence. The Safety of all our guests is and remains our top priority. Here at the Lani Kai, we strive to provide a safe and fun environment for all our guests including families and children.
