Residents urging commission to move faster on speeding problem along St. Andrews Boulevard

Dozens of residents living along St. Andrews Boulevard in the Lely community have filed a petition with Collier County, asking commissioners to take immediate action on a speeding problem.

"We have got too much of a dangerous situation to wait," said resident Rita Pyrdoll.

Pyrdoll and her neighbors are afraid to even step onto their street, which connects Rattlesnake Hammock Road, with Tamiami Trail.

"They are speeding, they are tailgating in rage," she said.  "You know what it's like to be followed by someone who is just not happy with your speed?"

The county did add a 4-way stop sign last month, but that hasn't stopped the problem.

"As soon as you have stop signs, you have rear end collisions, and that's happened already, so we put flags on them, and now we've put lights on them," said District 1 Commissioner Donna Fiala.

Pyrdoll wants the county to take it a step further by closing certain streets and adding roundabouts to curb speeders.  She worries someone may be killed if the county doesn't act soon.  "Drastic is not a bad word, it means far reaching.  That's what we need at this point we need a drastic change."

Commission Chair Penny Taylor says county staff will have a list of recommendations by the next meeting. In the meantime, she's asking the sheriff's office to step up patrols in the area.
