Rep. Francis Rooney files term limits bill

Southwest Florida Congressman Francis Rooney filed a bill in Congress that would propose term limits for members of the House and Senate.

The "Thomas Jefferson Act of 2018" would limit House members and senators to 12 years in office.  Under the bill, members could continue to serve after the 12 years are up, but their annual salary would be reduced to a dollar per year.

"Even though some Washington pundits and some of the so-called “special interests” might disagree, I would argue that regular rotation of elected officials would stimulate more fresh ideas and make our legislators more independent," said Rooney, first elected to the House in 2016.

Instituting term limits normally requires a constitutional amendment, but this bill only needs a simple majority for passage and President Trump's signature to become law.
