FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Parents flooded the public comment portion of the Lee County School Board meeting demanding action for school bus stop safety.

“We are serious about what we are here doing, we want the change and we want it now,” said Terri Johns, Parent.

The two fatal hit-and-run accidents that claimed the lives of Alana Tamplin and Layla Aiken are prompting parents to speak out about school bus stop safety.

“These kids are out here walking in the dark, it’s just not right, and school choice has a lot to do with that, “ said Mitchell McCowen, Parent.

The ten parents that spoke out at Tuesday's school board meeting agreed later start times and putting lights at bus stops could help in preventing future tragedies.

“We need to really look at what improvements can be made to specific bus stops, I’m kind of thinking of a public private partnership, if there are benches involved maybe a business adopts a bench,” said Kevin Daly, President, Teacher's Association of Lee County.

The Lee County School Board will be hosting a town hall meeting to discuss school bus safety Tuesday, April 16th from 6-7:30pm.
