NORTH PORT, Fla. -- Memorial Day is the unofficial kick off to summer and it’s a weekend where law enforcement encourages people to not drink and drive.

Friday night North Port Police Department’s traffic unit and special enforcement team partnered with Florida State Highway Patrol to conduct what they call a DUI saturation.

16 units from North Port Police Department and Florida Highway Patrol were out patrolling the area.

Since the beginning of the year NPPD started a traffic unit to increase safety on the roadways.

Year to date there’s been a 120% increase in DUI arrests and more than 2,000 traffic stops.

“Don’t drink and drive, we are out here, we will take you to jail, there are no breaks this weekend, we are here to keep our citizens safe,” said Officer Scott Guzman, North Port Police Department.

Monday night NPPD will be conducting another DUI saturation.
