NATIONAL HARBOR, MD -- The Scripps National Spelling Bee kicked off Tuesday morning near Washington, DC, and we're closely following two spellers from the Southwest Florida area.

The Preliminary rounds are taking place Monday through Wednesday. The Finals will be held Thursday, with Part 1 starting at 10 am. and Part 2 at 8:30 p.m.

ROUND 1:

All the spellers took the Preliminaries Test Monday morning. The results of this test will determine which of the remaining spellers after Round 3 will advance to the finals.

ROUND 2:

Isabel Liu got off to an early start Tuesday as Speller #8.

Next up was Bharath Ram from Naples as Speller #227. He was successful, too.

Both spellers advance to Round 3 of the preliminaries, starting at 4:45 p.m. Tuesday (spellers 1-114), and continuing Wednesday morning (spellers 115-567).

ROUND 3:

Isabel successfully spelled her 3rd round word Tuesday evening:

Wednesday morning, Bharath found success, too.

Both spellers had a chance to advance to Finals on Thursday, but unfortunately Isabel and Bharath were not among the top scorers in the Preliminaries Test taken Monday. Only the top 50 advanced to the Finals, which begin at 10 a.m. Thursday.
