CAPE CORAL, Fla. — Caitlin smith said her five-year-old son’s bus stop on SW 15th Ave and SW 10th St isn’t safe because it’s in the middle of the block, right in front of a construction site.

“There’s nails, there’s tools, there’s broken glass even that I’ve seen. I’ve stepped on a nail getting the kids onto the bus,” she said. “Yesterday there was a circular saw being used in the middle of the road, right in front of the truck, right where I park. And if a kid didn’t know to look for it, they would’ve tripped over it.”

there are bus stops at each end of the street where her son’s bus stop is…but they don’t go to his school, skyline elementary. she wants lee county schools to make an adjustment.

“Just move the bus stop,” she said.

Cece Bousanti goes to Ida Baker High School, but picks up her little brother from the bus stop everyday after school. She said she’s concerned about his safety, too.

“If he gets off, he might get hit,” she said. “If I can’t make it one day or something, my brother has to walk home, and he’s not going to be able to in the middle of the street.”

In a statement Lee County Schools said:

“When our drivers notice construction causing issues or parents alert us to construction zones we send our safety team out to inspect the stop to make sure it is still meets the safety requirements. We will move the stop if it no longer meets the safety requirements.”
