CAPE CORAL, Fla. — A middle school assignment in Lee County originally got many parents upset.

A parent posted in a Facebook group about a homework assignment for Mariner Middle School English students involving the term white privilege.

The school district says it's part of a 6-grade unit called “Facing Fear” and with administrative approval, the teacher chose the theme embracing diversity.

The worksheet students were asked to fill out students had to give their own definitions of words including racism, integration and white privilege.

The students then met in small groups to talk about what kinds of emotions or ideas the words carry and the dictionary definitions students were then asked to do the same for the term white privilege as homework.

According to a district spokesperson the lesson is meant to promote critical thinking in dialog about important issues the district has not received any complaints from parents.
