Mayor's first meeting after storming out

CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- Mayor Marni Sawiciki's early exit last week got some people to show up early for this week's council meeting. They held a rally with signs asking the mayor to step down.

"For one thing, I think Cape Coral deserves a mayor that serves with dignity," said Shelia Sweeney, who helped organize the rally.

Mayor Sawiciki began the meeting telling those in attendance she was sorry and only human. However, the group outside wanted a little more than just an apology.

The group held up "no more tantrum" signs. They wanted a little more than an apology.

"Last Monday was the last straw, it was embarrassing. We were once again the laughing stock of Southwest Florida," said Jay Lagrace after seeing what happened at a meeting.

The group held up "no tantrum" signs. They say they wanted more professionalism in their elected officials.

"I really think she is letting a lot of her personal life get involved with her business life. She needs to step aside and get some help," said Sweeney.

But Mayor Sawicki did get some support at Monday's meeting.

"I don't blame our mayor one bit for what she did last week," said one concerned mother, who wanted more attention towards the Cape's charter school program.

She thinks the people who were outside should've left their signs outside the council chambers and participate in public comment.

"People always talk the big talk but they don't always walk the walk with it," she added.

The group's mission tonight was to send a message to the mayor.

"I want her to know that as a citizen, I do not appreciate the way she has treated our council and the council members," said Sweeney.

Council member Jim Burch ready to put the past behind them.

"Let's try and have calmer heads prevail throughout. i can't thank everyone who said their peace at the podium in a very respectful manner," he said.
