LEE COUNTY, Fla. -- An altercation in a North Fort Myers homeless camp has led to a guilty verdict for Aggravated Battery.
According to the State Attorney's Office, 26-year-old Damien Ato Smith was found guilty Tuesday after a one day trial followed by one hour of deliberation.
Authorities say that in June 2019, a homeless man entered a camp to visit a friend. Smith became angry at the man and attacked him with a baseball bat, hitting him in the face and head.
Smith then ran away and hid. Deputies found Smith about five hours later hiding behind a tent.
Smith's sentencing is scheduled for October 28th. He faces up to 15 years in prison.
