CAPE CORAL, Fla. -- Police say a Cape Coral man has passed away due to injuries sustained in a scooter crash on Chiquita Boulevard last month.

71-year-old Roger Sowards passed away on August 15th.

According to Cape Coral Police, the crash happened on July 25th. They say Sowards was operating an electric mobility scooter on SW 30th Terrace and attempted to cross Chiquita Boulevard. Sowards reportedly didn't stop at a stop sign and entered Chiquita into the path of a southbound car.

The driver of the car attempted to avoid Sowards but hit him and the scooter, knocking Sowards to the ground.

Sowards was taken to Lee Memorial Hospital with injuries that were not initially thought to be life threatening. However, the medical examiner says Sowards died from complications from injuries suffered in the crash.

The car's driver is not being charged in the crash.
