A Cape Coral man caught a burglar breaking into his lanai. The suspect fled the scene, and investigators are working to track him down.

It happened at a home on Savona Parkway. The man told Cape Coral Police he heard a noise coming from his lanai at around 1:00 Wednesday morning, so he went outside to check it out. He saw a man breaking in, and when the man saw him, he told police the man ran to his car and took off.

Bill Jungblom moved nearby a week ago.

"I wouldn't think there would be much of a crime problem around here," Jungblom said. "It's concerning. We're from Kentucky, and we don't do a lot of door locking there, so I never really thought about somebody just walking onto your lanai, just trying to get in your back door."

In a similar story in May at another Cape Coral home, a homeowner held an invader, who was after prescription pills, at gunpoint until police arrived. Jungblom said he'd do the same.

"I am a retired army guy, so I would probably attempt to apprehend this person by whatever means necessary," he said.

But Cape Coral Police say if you're in this situation, they don't encourage you to take it upon yourself to detain someone.

"If that's what they want to do and they're successful, safely, that's great, but we never ask people to do that," Cpl. Phil Mullen said.

Cpl. Mullen said you never know how dangerous an intruder can be, so instead, you should get the best description possible of the suspect and his getaway car. In this case, the man is described as white and six feet tall. He fled in a white Ford Mustang.

If you know anything about this case, call Cape Coral Police or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-780-TIPS.
