LEE COUNTY, Fla.--  A man is facing charges for speeding and driving without a license in a deadly crash  that happened back in May.

Florida Highway Patrol arrested 40-year-old Hermelo Maya Arias after an investigation into a crash on State Road 80 and Joel Boulevard. The crash happened on May 27, 2018.

Troopers say Arias was driving eastbound on S.R. 80 at 70 mph in a posted 45 mph zone, approaching the green light at Joel Blvd. 21-year-old Taylor Hicks from Labelle was driving westbound on S.R. 80, trying to turn left onto southbound Joel Blvd while facing a green light.

Hicks turned left in front of Arias' car and they crashed. Both cars ended up on the shoulder. Hicks died from her injuries. Arias and his passenger had minor injuries and were sent to Lee Memorial Hospital.

Arias was charged for driving without a license causing death, which is a third degree felony. He will additionally be charged for exceeding the posted speed limit involving a crash with death, which carries a mandatory court date.
