LEE COUNTY, Fla. -- A showing of solidarity this weekend as several Southwest Florida communities honored fallen firefighters.
This was part of the 38th annual National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend.
Five Southwest Florida fire stations lined the driveways of their firehouses with luminary bags.
Every October for the past 25 years, the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation has sponsored this memorial.
John Lockwood with the Iona MacGregor Fire District says that about 90 firefighters a year die nationwide in the line of duty. “We all come from somewhere, so mothers and fathers, and brothers and sisters, wives and husbands and so on and so forth, and you know, a firefighter’s life lost is somebody has a hole in their life.”
Lockwood said he is proud that his district took things a step further to honor those they have lost.
The event ended with flags flying at half staff.
