Lee Sheriff offering citizen's class for active shooter situations

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- The Lee County Sheriff's Office is partnering with the Lee County Department of Public Safety and the Lee County Trauma District to offer the public a class discussing how to respond to an active shooter situation.

The Citizen's Response to Active Shooter & Mass Casualty event will be held Saturday, June 16 at Barbara B. Mann Performing Arts Hall from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m.

"We must empower the public to be part of the solution if the unthinkable occurs," said Undersheriff Carmine Marceno at a press conference Thursday.

Topics will include:

  • How to react to an event
  • Defensive actions when confronted by an assailant
  • Basic life-saving techniques you can use before first responders arrive

Participants can register for the event HERE.

No firearms will be allowed, and bags will be subject to searches.
