LEE COUNTY, Fla. — As seasonal residents and visitors head back north, Lee County Solid Waste encourages everyone to donate unopened food items as part of the second annual "Donated, not Wasted" food rescue campaign.
According to a 2016 waste audit, about 70,000 tons of the waste stream in Lee County is food. Nationally, Americans throw out about 30% of the available food supply.
In an effort to help change that, food donations can be dropped off at several locations in Lee County from Monday the 8th to the 22nd.
Last year, 3,771 pounds of food was donated in two weeks, which was enough to feed nearly 3,200 people.
