Lee County mother concerned over school bathroom policy

LEHIGH ACRES, Fla. — Should Lee County high school students be escorted to the bathroom?

That question is at the center of this online petition.

Lehigh Senior High School parent, Jennifer Long, started it on Tuesday and as of Wednesday afternoon, it's more than halfway to its goal of 100 signatures.

Long says this all started after her daughter, who attends Lehigh Senior High School, recently came to her with concerns about going to the bathroom.

The teen told her mother that students have to wait to escorted to and from the bathroom by security guards and she claims that sometimes they don't come at all.

According to the Lee County School District, that policy isn't new and has been in place at Lehigh Senior High School and several other schools in the district for two years.

Lehigh Senior High School currently has more than 2600 students enrolled and 9 hall monitors on hand to escort students.

They say they put the rule on the books to help cut down on bad behavior in bathrooms, which include vaping and school threats.

District spokesman, Rob Spicker, released the following statement on the matter:

"The safety and security of our students is our top priority."
