LEE COUNTY, Fla. -- A deputy on overnight patrol did duty as an alligator wrangler, using a piece of equipment as a makeshift lasso.

According to the Lee County Sheriff's Office, Deputy Van Pelt was on patrol on McGregor Boulevard when he saw the reptile walking on the road. He used a baton to guide it onto the road's shoulder, where he used his rifle sling as a lasso around the gator's mouth.
